Where nature meets industry, ear Copenhagen’s historic ramparts and at the edge of the former industrial area of Refshaleøen, lies the new Amager Resource Center. The project on Kraftværksvej includes an administration building and staff facilities for waste collection in the City of Copenhagen. 1:1 Landskab designed the landscape and outdoor areas.

Access
The resource center handles a high volume of traffic, including waste collection trucks and staff vehicles. Therefore, the asphalt in the various parking areas is executed in two types: one designed for truck parking and another for car parking. Road surfaces are constructed to withstand heavy-duty traffic. Concrete is used for walkways and outdoor areas surrounding the building footprint, as well as beneath the bicycle shelter. Where possible, existing concrete will be demolished and recycled for future surfacing.

Urban Nature Inspired by Copenhagen’s Ramparts

Inspired by the natural landscapes found along Copenhagen’s historic grassy ramparts, the vision is to enhance local biodiversity by creating green corridors for birds and insects across the newly constructed parking area. Planting beds—drawing inspiration from traditional field hedgerows and featuring native species—are introduced throughout the site. A strong sense of seasonality, with shifting foliage, blooms, and fruit, attracts birds and insects and also provides a lush and ever-changing experience for people. Nesting boxes and other features will be installed to support a diverse range of wildlife.

Along the building’s façade, seating areas, and bicycle parking, rain gardens will be established to manage stormwater through local infiltration. To allow shortcuts through the planting beds in the parking area, galvanized steel grates will be installed.
