Description

Active Urban School
Nordøst Amager School is located between Holmbladsgade and Prags Boulevard, surrounded by the bustling life of the city—cars, buses, and urban activity. The school’s footprint is compact, so the design reaches upward. In addition to adding square meters, the vertical design lifts the outdoor areas onto the rooftops at different levels, high above the city's noise and fumes. The school is built across several levels, which are revealed as you move through its playful, ascending architecture—from the ground floor to the fourth floor.

Open to the Neighborhood
Large exterior staircases facing the street invite local residents to explore the school’s active ground floor. On the first floor lies the largest outdoor area, featuring planting beds, seating areas, play towers, and a slide leading back to street level. In this way, the space becomes both a schoolyard and a shared public area where children can play even after school hours.

Learning in the Open Air
The outdoor spaces are designed with learning facilities close to the buildings, making it easy to bring classes outside. Adjacent to the Nature and Science classrooms on level 4, planting beds are created as outdoor labs for hands-on learning. Further from the buildings, children can run freely and engage in more active play, while quiet nooks offer space for retreat when a break is needed. At the same time, the design remains flexible and future-proof, allowing school staff to adapt it to new research and evolving teaching methods. It’s the ideal blend of play, learning, and movement.
