Beckergrube, Lübeck
Info
Description
Beckergrube Street leads directly into the historic center of Lübeck, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The street also connects the promenade of the main river Trave with the city's pedestrian street and very active city life.
Today, Beckergrube has a relatively active everyday life, but the current design of the street does not contribute positively to this. Beckergrube is located between the music and congress hall to the west and St. Katharina Church to the east. The area features a mix of historic and new buildings. This gives Beckergrube a high degree of site-specific and innovative characteristics. It offers a unique opportunity to create a street with hip urban culture in the heart of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The result will be a vibrant urban space that contributes to the development of Lübeck..
The new streetscape highlights the unique qualities of Beckergrube and Lübeck as a whole in a new modern way. Simple and robust materials are used to complement the existing qualities, continuing the romantic appeal of the city center down Beckergrube.
Four key elements form the basis of the design:
● 1 continuous floor: a coherent, continuous brick pacing
● 100 trees: trees create the new green space in the city: increasing the number of trees is the most important building block on the way to a microclimatically well-functioning, climate-proof street. They create a high ecological added value and increase biodiversity.
● 1000 experiences: Paving and plants create different types of experience spaces along the street.
● Past - present - future: The historical attractions of the street are given a new prominent role. At the same time, modern elements are added. The interplay between the historic and the new sets the stage for future urban life in Lübeck.
