Oberbillwerder – Central Axis and square by the canal

Info
Description
The kilometre-long axis combines green recreational zones, cafés, playgrounds, and sports areas with rainwater management and biodiverse planting.
he eastern side of the axis is the urban side, where the afternoon and evening sun make outdoor dining a natural part of daily life.
The western side is lush and green, offering urban life as well – but in the form of non-commercial spaces for relaxation and activity, shaded by free-standing trees.
The streetscape is defined by a surface of small granite cobblestones, interrupted by crosswalks paved in warm-toned tiles and narrow bands of recycled granite or concrete. These intersecting paths connect the axis with the surrounding streets.
The central axis of Oberbillwerder is divided into three unique segments: The Clearings, the Green Spine, and the Park Belt.
Each segment has its own character and function. Together, they will form the backbone of public life in the neighbourhood.
The Clearings
Here, the traditional street structure is broken up by green pockets with trees, play areas, and space for activities. Large collection zones manage rainwater and promote biodiversity, while flexible surfaces make it easy to move around – whether you're walking, cycling, or making deliveries.
The Green Vein
At the heart of the district runs a green lifeline: three parallel zones of planting, pathways, and gathering spaces.
The Park Belt
At the edge of the city, the axis meets nature. The Park Belt links city and park – a lush belt with paths, bridges, shaped to guide rainwater away while inviting movement and relaxation.
