Description

Functional urban space in a small area

The idea for the urban space in front of the multi-purpose venue on Arsenaløen was for it to serve multiple purposes while being easy to navigate around in for its users. Therefore, 1:1 Landskab designed an urban space with a clear and simple layout that includes bicycle parking, parking spaces for cars and space for arrivals, goods delivery and fire rescue services. There was also a wish for recreational zones for active and relaxing breaks outdoors. The challenge therein was the narrowness of the plot, which also had to have enough room for the future Christianshavnsruten bicycle link.

Urban space inspired by sports flooring

1:1 Landskab came up with a solution by placing the multi-purpose venue on a functional and robust asphalt surface with painted stripes reminiscent of basketball courts and football pitches. The surface serves as the venue's outdoor carpet and is planted with ginkgo trees. A series of painted pipes in the venue’s signature colour injects life into the area as the trees grow. At each end, a gravel strip has been constructed with space for bicycle parking to the north and parking spaces to the south.

Wooden deck for play and relaxation

A wooden deck runs from the building down to Laboratoriegraven, tying the outside and inside together. The wooden deck is furnished with bends and plateaus, creating a natural spot for relaxation and activities for all age groups. The deck is interrupted by the bike path, but continues down to the water, where it also bends and creates two more plateaus. Willows and alder are planted along the bank

Accessibility on site

The square provides level access to all doors of the new sports hall. Solid asphalt pavements and large stone formats ensure a high degree of accessibility. The activity plaza and the concrete stone arrival plaza lead visitors naturally to the entrance area, aided by the clear lighting of the arrival area.

“The people of Christianshavn have gotten more than just a sports hall; they have gotten a modern community centre and unique urban space.”
